Class of 1953 50th Reunion

DHS Class of 1953
50th Reunion
by Class of 1953

Plans were begun approximately one year ago in preparation for the 50th Class Reunion of Demopolis High School, Class of 1953.  After collecting the names, addresses, and email addresses of classmates, it was decided to make this year one of special memories.  After realizing that so many of the class members were living in other states and would have to travel a great distance, the committee decided to have a week-end of activities.

Friday night, May 23rd, a fish fry was held at 5 o'clock at Foscue Park with a total attendance of 27 class members, sp0ouses and friends.  Many camera were clicking and flashing to record all the hugs and kisses.  A feast of boiled shrimp, all sorts of chips and dips, fried fish, hushpuppies, slaw and baked beans were enjoyed by all.  For dessert there was an abundance of cookies, brownies, cakes, and other sweets.

Saturday morning 13 of the group boarded a WAPT bus for a tour of Demopolis.  Since some of the group had not returned since graduation, they were very impressed with the changes that had occurred in the town.  Places of interest included a tour of the old Demopolis High School, a ride by the new high school and the Sportsplex.  The group also enjoyed seeing the expansion of he local cement plant, many of the beautiful historical homes, and the new homes in the Demopolis area.  Jimmy Spencer (Class of 1952) did an excellent job as our tour guide.

Saturday afternoon, some of the men left the group to play golf as guests of Eddie Willingham at the Demopolis Country Club.  They reported a most enjoyable afternoon.  While the men were golfing the remainder of the group were invited by Patsy and Hawkins Moore to the Jefferson Community House for lunch.  This was a great time for fellowship.

Saturday night a group of 19 met at Ellis V for a delicious dinner.  A table had been set up with old annuals, pictures, and other memorabilia for viewing.  The dining tables were each decorated with a beautiful red rose (the class flower).  Thomas Logan, the President of the 1953 Class presided.  He welcomed all the members and guests and thanked the reunion committee for their planning and preparations.  He then led in a moment of silent prayer for the following deceased members of the class:  Ben Gregory, Dawson Abrams, John Anderegg, C. J. Carpenter, Violet Jackson, Marie Watson, Patty Partridge and Jeanette Reeves.  Following this each class member was introduced and they in turn introduced their spouse and gave a brief summary of the last 50 years of their life.  A history of the class from grades 1 through 12 was read by Ro Willingham Crocker, the Class Historian.  After the meal the group enjoyed a cake especially made and decorated for the occasion.

Sunday morning 10 members of the group attended the service at First Baptist Church which was the church that most members of the class had attended while in school.

Not wanting to part from all the memories and fellowship but realizing that some of the group had come from great distances, sad good-byes were said.  All agreed that a wonderful time was had by all!  Class members attending and their current hometowns are: Patsy (Coats) Moore, Jefferson, AL; Eddie Willingham, Demopolis, AL; Mary Joyce (Leverett) Price, Pensacola, FL; Ro (Willingham) Crocker, Thomaston, AL; Estelle (Spear) Money, Demopolis, AL; James Bouler, Monroeville, AL; Thomas Logan, Cheyenne, WY; Eleanor (Dozier) Gardei, Snowflake, AZ; Sherrill (Pruitt) Ropek, Westland, MI; Jack Malone, Raleigh, NC; Bobby Pearce, Birmingham, AL; and Mary (Perry) Ezell, Butler, AL.
