The Bigbee Barons

This picture is believed to have been taken in 1946-47.  The place was in the Elks Hall that was located just above the old Alabama Power Company when it was on Washington Street.
L-R: Luke Lucas, Jim Clem, Jack Neuhauser, Frank King, Ed Levy, Clarence Ulmer, Sanders Ulmer, Boyd Mackey.  Ernestine Maxey and Sanders played the piano.  The vocalists were Mary Ann Flowers, Elsie and Elaine Johnson.

Other members were Bobby "the wheel" Kyser, Snookie Barnes, Barry Collins, Leo Hart, Jimmy Nettles, John Caldwell, Evelyn Torbert, Jerry English (professor of music at Livingston State), Gene Schnell and Lanie ?.  When needed Jerry English could build the band up to orchestra size with students from Livingston State.  Gene Schnell became band director at DHS around 1957-58.  He and his wife, Penny, lived in Demopolis for several years before moving on to Chatom.
