Notable Events of 1954

President Eisenhower modifies the Pledge of Allegiance from "one nation indivisible" to "one nation, under God, indivisible".

 The Supreme Court unanimously rules to desegregate public schools: "the doctrine of separate, but equal has no place."

 Researcher Jonas Salk puts a polio vaccine to the test.  The vaccine is successful and polio cases begin to decline.

The public is alerted to the dangers of radioactive wastes.

After 30 years of experimenting and unfortunate set backs due to World War II, television becomes a fixture in the American Home.

The first color TV's are marketed by RCA for $1000.

First Miss America Pageant is broadcast on television.

Elvis Presley makes his first commercial recording and signs with RCA.  He would become the King of Rock 'n' Roll and a legend in his own time.

The Boeing 707, the first jet-powered transport, is tested.

Playboy magazine issue features Margie Harrison, the first playmate.

In Memphis, Tennessee, WHBQ becomes the first radio station to air an Elvis Presley record.

Stop signs are changed from black-on-yellow to white-on-red.

The Hudson Motor Car Company merges with Nash-Kelvinator forming the American Motors Corporation.
