Ulmer Furniture Co.
“We Turn Houses Into Homes”

ULMER FURNITURE COMPANY, Inc. was established in 1917 by three brothers
— O. S., I. B. and DuBrutz Ulmer. The original location was on Franklin
Street, but later the business was moved to Strawberry Street.
In 1920 the partnership was dissolved and O. S. Ulmer formed the Ulmer
Furniture Company. He moved the business to its present location on
Washington Street in 1924.
Saunders Ulmer Jr., President of the corporation, joined the business in
1942 after completing four years of study at Alabama Polytechnic
Institute (Auburn), where he specialized in Home Design. He has been
manager of the firm since that time. His 13 years of experience in
helping homemakers in West Alabama decorate and furnish their homes has
helped to put into application the old slogan of Ulmers’s — “We Turn
Houses Into Homes”.
Clarence K. Ulmer, Vice President and Treasurer of the firm, joined
his brother in the business in 1945. Mrs. O. S. Ulmer Sr. (Miss Bessie)
was actively engaged in the business until her sudden death in January
of this year.
George Randall, Salesman and Installation Mechanic, has been associated
with the firm for a total of six years, and Miss Jeanette Tate,
Bookkeeper, has been with the company for six years.
Mrs. O. S. Ulmer Jr. (Weezie) started with the firm three years ago as
assistant bookkeeper. She came with the idea of just “helping out”
during a busy period, but has never found a suitable time to quit.
Walter Payne, Porter, has been with the company since May 1930.
